Please Help Fight Famine
A deadly combination of conflict and climate-related drought have produced a perfect storm for mass food insecurity. Right now, 50 million people are on the brink of famine. In the Horn of Africa around 20.2 million children face severe hunger, thirst and disease, compared to 10 million in July. One person is dying every 48 seconds in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. This is an urgent crisis that cannot wait. Previous experience tells that early investment saves lives. Australia has provided $40 million to date, for which we are grateful, though we believe a further $110 million should be provided for this emergency. Millions of lives are at stake, and the need for collaborative global efforts aimed at addressing and recovering from this food crisis has never been greater. How Australia can help: 1. Make an urgent investment of a further $110 million in a Famine Prevention Package to stop a catastrophe in the worst-affected hunger hotspots in the Horn of Africa, Yemen, Afghanistan and Syria 2. Increase the humanitarian assistance budget overall by: - raising the annual allocation of the Humanitarian Emergency Fund to $300 million - investing $200 million annually in a Global Food Security Strategy to fight the root causes of hunger. 3. Commit to raise the aid budget to 0.5% of GNI and for this target to be locked in legislation, as a matter of urgency.
